A very brief history of Rome: The
"Urbe" was founded on 753 B.C. and was first governed by 7 kings
(753-510 B.C.);then as a Republic by Consuls (510- 30 ) and finally
by Emperors (30 B.C. - 476 A.C.). During the Middle Ages, the Church
established its temporal rule and Rome remained the seat of the
papal court untill 1870, when the Italian army entered Rome and the
"Eternal City" became the capital of a united Italy. The only
Vatican remained under the sovereignity of the Pope. Today, the
Vatican is the smallest state of the world (0,440 SqKms). Rome has a
population of three and half million inhabitants.
